The name Hogan is an anglicized form of Gaelic Ó hÓgáin  meaning “descendant of Ógán”,  a personal name from a diminutive of óg  meaning “young or young warrior.” Some bearers of the name Hogan claim descent from an uncle of Brian Boru, the last High King of Ireland. A notable bearer was Michael Hogan the Gaelic footballer killed by British forces while playing a football match on Bloody Sunday in Dublin 1n 1920.
